Yawn. Blackberries are SO last year.
Intrepid @ Sep 24th 2006 7:39AM
@ Billy Zane
Blackberrys really are so last year. I think they need to move onto a WM5 system and dump that ugly blackberry crap. and their units are sooo hideous. The Q beats that rubbish hands down.
Sean @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:01PM
Why are the Z and Y reversed on that guy?
jeff @ Sep 23rd 2006 10:31PM
aint that why they call it qwerty keyboard, why move the letter y and exchange it with letter z. Boy Genuis is his name? hmmmmmm.
PistolPeet @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:03PM
The unit is probably German, they have their Z and Y switched on the keyboard. It gets REALLY difficult to type.
Jeff Parker @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:24AM
Yes, VERY difficult, because of course 'z' and 'y' are two of the most commonly used letters in the English language.
Nice observation, jack.
Michael @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:10PM
Can somebody tell me why people love these huge brick phone/PDA montrosities? Not only are they the ugliest things I've seen but I can't see how they can be user friendly in the least bit. Not to mention you look retarded walking down the street with one because they're so huge.
Also why doesn't Engadget remember my password? It's just as annoying to go look for the password in the email Engaget sends as to just confirm a post by email after the fact. Do you guys just not have everything working completely yet or am I missing a button somewhere? There needs to be a "remember me" check box for current users so our password stays filled in.
S.A. @ Sep 24th 2006 12:09AM
There is a remember me button right above the reply box.
anon @ Sep 24th 2006 9:36PM
lol big. These phones are small.
Mike D @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:36PM
@Michael stop talking you probably haven't used one nor have a need for one for those of us who do this phone is amazing. You're also ignorant.. just thought you'd like to know.
Jack @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:43PM
I'm with Michael and Billy Zane on this. It looks RUBBISH. Blackberries are only used by idiot suits who have no social life anyway.
Bob @ Sep 23rd 2006 6:02PM
"Suits"...ha, nobody talks like that! Next you're going to be using words like "Fascist" and "Imperialistic".
Anyway, I didn't think I'd like a blackberry, but then work required me to have one and HOLY crap! I fell in love because it is connected to all my email accounts as well as being my cell phone. It has helped both business and communication with family & friends.
rawr @ Sep 25th 2006 1:59PM
Naw...I know teenagers who have them.
BFB @ Sep 5th 2007 9:41PM
hey jack & michael
you guy's probably still wear leisure suits,no eye for class.go away
matthew @ Sep 23rd 2006 6:05PM
nothing worse then people who get offended by technology
Kevlar @ Sep 23rd 2006 6:40PM
I don't know. I never liked chrome shiny gadgets. They smudge up, or reflect sun in your eyes when you're trying to use them.
The speckled carbon-fibre look is always nice. Plus it always seems smooth no matter how dirt-smudged it gets.
Just look at how nice that Moto Q looks!
PT Cruiser @ Sep 23rd 2006 7:50PM
For what it is, it looks really slick. I like the flashy black coloring they've gone with here.
David @ Sep 23rd 2006 9:50PM
Michael - please think before talking or typing. Blackberries are the most user friendly PDA phones on the market. I could give a rats arse what I look like when I'm talking on it/using it. The fact that it makes me reachable and "in the office", makes it worthwhile for me. You go look cool talking on your tiny, slim sexy phone. I think guys who worry about how they look while using a phone are retarded. Make sure your phone matches your outfit before going out tonight.
sunaina @ Sep 23rd 2006 9:58PM
that seems hard to only press one button at a time on
resource @ Sep 24th 2006 12:10AM
Have any of the people talking shit seen the Blackberry Pearl in person?
They are trying to drop the ugly box phone image.
It's working.
While this has no camera it's still pretty hot.
tcugrilla @ Sep 24th 2006 12:29PM
The three people that actually have the Q would tell you that the initials POS actually applies. Why are blackberry's so last year? And who cares what year they are if they do their job?
Tim @ Sep 24th 2006 9:13AM
The Q is a piece of shit. I dont know what you are talking about. Have you heard the awfull revies on the wm5 mobile devices? You must be able to afford it, since they are giving away q's.
bluespark @ Sep 24th 2006 3:37PM
I have to use one of these (8700g) for work, and it's a monsterous brick. I will admit that the underlying technology is quite cool, and it does indeed make my life more convenient. The problem is that it could be so much better still. The thing is truly huge -- yes, it fits in my pocket, but it doesn't leave room for anything else, and I do have other things I have to carry. The interface is a mixed bag. Typing and e-mail are extremely easy, and it does well with attachments; hence BlackBerry's entire reputation. The PIM programs and basic interface, though, are kludgy in a way that seems like a throwback to ten years ago.
I, for one, really hate to sacrifice style for functionality. For that reason, I'll use my BlackBerry, but I'll never like it.
Gold Farmer @ Sep 24th 2006 4:57PM
Track Balls suck
JLove @ Sep 24th 2006 9:58PM
I want to wait for the HTC Trinity
Brian @ Sep 24th 2006 10:13PM
I agree. I mean blackberries are pathetic and for old government employees. Their salaries match their ability to choose a good handset.
Old Government Employee @ Sep 24th 2006 10:35PM
Brian --
I've logged your IP address and made a note of it in my Blackberry. I will forward the note to my friend, Old NSA Employee's Blackberry. We'll be keeping an eye on you, son.

Honestly, i think you really need to spend time with a BB to really see how you will like it, size-wize it may look pretty big, but if it's on your belt to your size you really don't notice it, what usually wins ppl over is how fast you can navigate through the menus as well as emails, and text messages. I use a 8700r and i've found it to be the most efficient phone for ease of data entry and menu navigation. The only downside i can see to BB's is that putting media (pics, ringtones, etc) is not easy, everything must be emailed in, so no data cables or BT can be used, oh well...i still love my BB :)
Zikki Majestic @ Sep 25th 2006 5:24AM
Shame on BlackBerry. They don't sell them in Russia. =(
Kevin @ Sep 25th 2006 8:27AM
I just got a blackberry pearl, my first smartphone, and I'm pretty happy with it, except for the weak vibrate and trackball movement muting the ringtone in the pocket issue.
uberphobi, with the pearl, you can put media on it with the blackberry desktop manager.

I wonder how much experience you have with WM5. The interface is clunky, taking too many actions to accomplish anything, and there are so many bugs in the system that it's hard to just get your phone alarm to work consistently and efficiently. While I do agree that it's nice to have freedom of choice in applications and other things, I would still much rather have a OS/UI that just works. It is for that reason that BB has remained a solid choice for the business community. It is for that same reason that after trying the treo 600 (Palm OS) and the T-Mobile MDA/HTC Wizard (WM5) I have decided to stick with the simple Sidekick 2. When a company is able to make a phone with the Wizard/Hermes form factor that just does what I need it to effectively and efficiently, I'll be happy. Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11G, quadband, Edge/3g/HSDPA/UTMS, and GPS would be lovely as well. : )
blackberryuser15 @ Oct 12th 2006 9:09PM
blackberrys are not last year whats last year is the stupid wm5...its sluggish and confusing to use to say the least its ugly...i love my blackberry and im only 16 so for any of you all who say blackberrys are stupid and last year i bet you all havent even seen one before only in pictures go to your local tmo or cingular store and try one
Amir @ Dec 27th 2006 7:51AM
I have a moto Q, bought it retail when it first came out. Really dumb. I already had one of those UTSTarcom windows mobile phones, which would freeze on me every so often. Then I got the Q. It was fine, people still think its an amazing super gadget, but deep down inside I know its a piece of shit. It freezes. It buzzes for no reason. The software has a lot of issues. My dad works at microsoft, and hes got the ut starcom phone (slide out keyboard). I had a treo 600 and 650 a while back, didnt like em too much. I just ordered the blackberry pearl, so I guess we will see how that goes. Im just getting sick of the Q already and I got it like a few months ago.
Tony @ Jan 11th 2007 6:09PM
I've had a BB since they first came on the market as pager-sized email devices with no phone at all. The second the phone model came out I got one and have stuck with them ever since. Every six months some friend gets a sexy new PDA/phone/email device with groovy new interfaces and styling bits, but not once has one of them stood up to my BB in functionality and durability. If you need fast, easy access to email and you need a phone and an uncomplicated address book, there is NOTHING better than the BB -- and I'm talking about the QWERTY style, not that girly predictive-typing Pearl. Once you get used to it, you'll be banging off emails faster on your QWERTY BB than on your desktop. Trust me on this. Oh, and if you're worried about how your phone looks, you're a moron and I can't help you.
King @ Jan 18th 2007 4:12PM
I have owned them all from Treo, Samsung 730I, Sprint/Verizon 6700, Moto Q and Black Jack. Previous BB 6720, 7250 and presently 8703e. Honestly the BB is best out of all just because of funtionality, OS stability and battery life. Just with BATTERY Life...........Need I say more.
Chancer @ Feb 14th 2007 12:15AM
The 8100 (Pearl) is not really targeted for business use so please refrain from suggesting that I look at the Pearl. Its not robust enough, its too small, feels flimsy and the camera is pointless.
Now with that said I love the 7130, it feels solid without being as bulky as the 8700, my question is - what are they trying to do with 8800? replace their current user base with devices geared towards the regular consumer market? I hope it stands up.
I really hope that BB build something that sits nicely between the 8100 and the 8800.... a bit like an up to date vesion of the 7130..... the right size, solidly built, business functional.
