Sophia Mobile's nani to rock Windows CE 6
It's not too often that we find a fairly well-spec'd all-in-one gizmo humming along on Windows CE 6, but apparently, Sophia Mobile's nani is one such device. According to "official specifications" just released, this PDA phone will also feature a 600MHz processor, 4.3-inch 800 x 400 resolution display, a potent media player that can handle MPEG1/2/3/4, DivX, XviD, WMA, WAV, and OGG formats, an image viewer, GPS, WiFi, a microSD expansion slot, USB connectivity, and support for PHS (W-SIM) in Japan. Moreover, it looks like a lucky soul managed to get a bit of hands-on time with the machine, so be sure and check out a few more angles after the break.

Holy nice-ness!
Sheila @ Aug 6th 2007 5:02PM
What's the disk space like (100g - 160g)?
St. Stephen @ Aug 6th 2007 5:06PM
word around the campfire is that HD space is around 400 GB's..
Sheila @ Aug 6th 2007 5:46PM
Sweet!! This is what I'm looking for. An all in one device - Web surfing, ebook reader (MSReader or Mobipocket), hold my entire music library and make phone calls too!!! If this device comes to Sprint(EV-DO Rev A or WiMax), I will not have to buy an UMPC.
Jose El Maton @ Aug 6th 2007 7:01PM
@ Sheila,
That asshole was lying. It couldn't possibly hold 400GB if it's a 1.8" drive, max is about 120GB. And I don't even think it has a hard disk drive. It doesn't say, at least. You'll probably have to rely on micro SD.
Ant @ Aug 6th 2007 5:09PM
Now if Psion came back and did this with a new Series 5 i'd be happy, but without the areal.
Paul @ Aug 6th 2007 5:10PM
The second picture looks like an old "transistor" radio - the antenna has to go!
Jason Falk @ Aug 6th 2007 5:49PM
That and the border around the screen needs to be trimmed down (or make the screen larger).
Yojimbo @ Aug 6th 2007 7:28PM
It is a special antenna for Japanese digital mobile TV... a totally mobile-only, free, wireless TV network... so in Japan, if you don't have TV on your phone, your are a total loser and your kawaii factor drops to seven ranks below "Hello Kitty Level." The antenna stays, I say!
apeguero @ Aug 6th 2007 8:43PM
Damn this is one nice looking device. Hopefully it doesn't use any Qualcom chips!
Hey Yojimbo, that kawaii factor, Hello Kitty comment was the funniest I've heard in a while.
Maff @ Aug 6th 2007 8:53PM
shouldn't that be kakkoii, as in 'cool'?
Bogdan @ Aug 6th 2007 5:16PM
I would buy one of these immediately as long as its under $300
St. Stephen @ Aug 6th 2007 5:30PM
price is supposed to be around $149
Sinbios @ Aug 6th 2007 6:21PM
Yeah, right. $300 won't even buy you the harddrive in that thing. Keep dreaming.
Stephen: Where'd you see that? You're probably off by a zero.
Jamar @ Aug 6th 2007 5:31PM
I live somewhere with a PHS network (Shanghai, China), but the locals haven't gotten the hang of programming a W-SIM so I'm out of luck... Although Someone got a W-ZERO3 to work, and that's W-SIM powered so I'd think it would just take some asking.
Matt @ Aug 6th 2007 6:31PM
That thing is a phone? Jesus, it's massive. Surely it's not a phone first and everything else later, it just happens to also make phone calls, right?
kyle allen @ Aug 6th 2007 6:39PM
ce? not 98se? ... i suppose its technicaly out dated, but its still my fav windows!
001100 @ Aug 6th 2007 8:14PM
to the guy who commented on ce and something about 98se Obviously you don't know anything about windows other than what your friends and the twits at best buy tell you, CE 6 is a current OS and is newer than vista, its not meant for desktops like 89se, XP, is or vista is, its only meant for engineers. But based on your moronic comment I suppose you already knew that, yeah right! It is a competitor to the Linux kernal engineers use to develop products.
Thats why I never go by web reviews or comments because of people like that, you never know who will say something and if it's true or not, or just bullshit they heard, or are making up by squinting really hard to make thier 4 brain cells work.
As for my comments one need only visit microsoft.com and search windows CE 6.0 and they will be fully validated
Maff @ Aug 6th 2007 8:57PM
001100, seriously what are you smoking?
Wolfticket @ Aug 6th 2007 10:12PM
It definitely looks like it is running Windows 98/ME in the pics. Doesn't look like CE to me, not-even-a-teeny-bit. Maybe XP in "classic" mode, but unlikely given the specks, maybe if I had a 5th braincell I could work it out.
Windows Compact Edition fanboys, a rare breed.
kyle allen @ Aug 7th 2007 2:57AM
ill admit im using vista right now, but thats only because of compatibility and dx10 and it was free. if it weren't for those few things, i would be using 98se, not because some "best buy" person told me to, but because i have used windows 3.1,95,98,98se,me,2k,xp,xp64,and vista. sofar 98se seems to be the best, its compatible with older and newer computers, it looks and runs clean and dependably, the only computer it didn't work well on for me had a bad hdd, but i guess your right, going with the crowd and getting the newest os is more important than the quality of that os. thanks for the insults.
kyle allen @ Aug 7th 2007 2:59AM
ps... i was kidding about them putting 98se on that
anthropoid @ Aug 7th 2007 10:08AM
@Wolfticket: Perhaps you're thinking of Windows Mobile, which is very different from Windows Embedded CE. See http://blogs.msdn.com/mikehall/archive/2007/01/17/windows-mobile-and-windows-embedded-ce-what-s-the-difference.aspx for a run-down of the difference. In short, WinMobile is WinCE with a custom shell (hence different look-n-feel), among other things.
So it's not hard to believe from the pics that [a] the report correctly identifies the nani's OS as WinCE rather than WinMobile, and [b] WinCE's shell hasn't changed since the early days. I have a circa-2000 Aero 8000 H/PC, and its desktop looks pretty much exactly the same as the nani's (and, for that matter, Win98).
Mike @ Aug 6th 2007 8:56PM
im waiting for someone to make the reference to the fact that its white, and say something about apple, then mention how its called the nani which is close to nano (also waiting on the will it play doom reference) (and the will it run linux reference) STAY TUNED!
hideki.adam @ Aug 6th 2007 10:35PM
Hihi
This device has no directional pad or by the looks of it hardware buttons of any description
This means that despite the nice spec it'll be completely useless for gaming, emulation etc.
Shame really :(
BPM @ Aug 6th 2007 10:56PM
Nani? Seriously, they named it the Japanese word for "what?"
Nipponese @ Aug 7th 2007 12:07AM
Also, in a slang term, "Nani" refers to your nether regions too.
BPM @ Aug 7th 2007 12:11AM
Ahaha, that's priceless.
Generic @ Aug 7th 2007 6:37AM
and now all my dreams have come true...
I can die in peace after buying this thing and using it for the rest of my life or till I replace it with the next version...
roc ingersol @ Aug 7th 2007 10:14AM
looks like an n800 for the windows crowd.
ya know, i don't even think that thing's gonna -have- a HDD.
