GamePark's GP2X F-200 handheld ships

We've drooled all over GamePark's GP2X F-200 handheld in the past, and it looks like the company is finally ready to let us have one of our very own -- the touchscreen Linux-based handheld emulation monster is shipping right on time for $169. meh, the F-100 was an awesome deal when it came out, but the PSP has overtaken it many ways over the years so now I sold my GP2X for one. PSP was always more powerful and now the homebrew is as good and better in many areas. Hopefully the next Gamepark Holdings (you forgot the Holdings Engadget) next device takes back the lead

yeah, I like the idea of 720x480 30fps xvid support but the early engadget hands on claimed video playback was sluggish. I think the rumoured next gen gamepark holdings device will be huge though if teh rumours are true.

Huh, these things look fairly interesting. Did anyone have experience with the earlier model? I'm wondering if I should try one out, or just rig my DS up to play homebrew and emulation.

I have an R4DS that was dirt cheap, and which I love for homebrew. For emulation, you might try to find a used old-model PSP -- most of them can still be downgraded and run on custom firmware. The DS just doesn't have the grunt to do some of the "newer" systems (e.g. into the 90s), while the CFW PSP will actually run almost any PS1 game using Sony's own emulator.

I'd get one of these if I could only have a single device, but for not much more, I can get a cheap PSP and a Nokia 770 -- the PSP for emulation, and the 770 for whatever touchscreen-y things I need to do. The PSP is faster, and the 770's got a full VGA screen, which is absolutely *gorgeous* at that size.

While I do enjoy my current GP2X I certainly hope this version fixes the previous issues. For one the joystick on the current GP2X when holding down and rotating to move does not register fluidly. For example if playing Golden Axe and you move the character diagonally down and then want to move straight down you have to let go of the joystick and then push down for it to register that movement. That really is a bad flaw in my opinion. From the looks of it the new directional pad may solve the problem.
Also the GP2X does not support wmv (windows media video files) appropriately. You can download and run software that is claimed to play wmv files but I've never gotten it to play any of my wmv files. Also the screen does tend to lean to the darker scale so watching certain movies with dark sequences can be a daunting task.
I do like the SDHC support however. Throwing in a nice 8GB card would be great. My current 4GB SD is way to full and I'm constantly deleting stuff to add new content (and no I don't like carrying around additional memory cards cause I usually just slip the GP2X in my pocket and go and I'd be afraid to lose a card). It would be nice if they made some sort of storage housing for additional memory cards (since the battery area sticks out so much anyway so they could easily make the whole thing a little thicker (instead of just the battery area) and have a place to store additional memory cards.
I do hope the touschreen provides useful functionality....like perhapes to be able to play shooting games you can press on the screen with the stylus to fire at that spot.....that would be sweet.
By the way James where in the world can you get a new PSP and new Nokia 770 for "not much more" than this GP2X F-200? I'm seriously asking. Not interested in getting a used PSP and used Nokia.

Of course, one of the big advantages IMHO is "Game Editor" which gives the ability to design games for this device as well as Pocket PCs, Smartphones, Windows and Linux. Check it out at www.game-editor.com.
